Former petroleum minister arrested in London, but released on bail.

Diezani Alison-Maduekwe

Reports yesterday afternoon, says that former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Maduekwe, was arrested in London yesterday by the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency(NCA). Maduekwe, was, according to reports, arrested alongside five(5) other persons yesterday in London. The persons who were also arrested, are believed to be the personal aids and business fronts to Mrs. Maduekwe.

Maduekwe, was said to be arrested for offences related to bribery and corruption being investigated by UK's crime agency.

The NCA which leads UK law enforcement fight against organised and serious crimes, has national and international reach, and the mandate to work with other law enforcement organisations, to bring the full weight of the law on criminals.

We brought you a report yesterday that the apartment of the former minister located at Asokoro, in Abuja, was stormed by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission(EFCC) shortly after her arrest. It was gathered that the EFCC, sealed the apartment, after a thoroughly conducted search which led to retrieval of valuable documents which can expedite the prosecution of the former minister.

It is still not clear if the arrest of Mrs. Maduekwe and others, are as a result of the federal governments order

It can be recalled that president Muhammadu Buhari, have been very vocal about his administration willingness to arrest and prosecute public service officers who have in one way or the other, embezzled the nations funds.

Confirming the NCA arrest of Mrs. Alison-Maduekwe yesterday, Press and Public Affairs Officer of the British Embassy in Lagos, Joseph Abuku, had said in a press statement:

“This morning, five people between the ages of 21 and 60 were arrested on suspicion of bribery and corruption offences. The crimes are being investigated by the National Crime Agency.

“The National Crime Agency does not confirm identity at arrest nor provide information that could be used to corroborate the identity of an arrested individual,” he said.

It was later reported that Madueke, was released on bail.
