Former Aston Villa assistant coach John Terry has emerged as a 'strong contender' for the Newcastle United managerial job after Steve Bruce was sacked, according to reports.



Newcastle have been in search for a new manager since parting ways with Steve Bruce earlier this month and as reported by the Express, Terry is in the frame to take over.


Graeme Jones is currently in caretaker charge and will likely have his final game against Chelsea this weekend.


The Express are reporting that Terry - who has been without a job since leaving Villa during the summer - has become a leading contender for the job at Newcastle.


His odds were slashed in the space of two hours to take over at St. James' Park, despite the club being heavily linked to former Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca.


Betfair have seen his odds to replace Bruce slashed from 66-1 to 10-1, but former AS Roma manager has been considered the favourite for a it has been reported by many sources to have held talks with Amanda Staveley over taking the job.


40-year-old Terry left his role as assistant head coach at Villa in the summer with the view of managing a football club elsewhere.


Terry's former teammates, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have both been linked to the job.
