On Wednesday, the senate, rejected a motion sponsored by Sen. Philip Aduda (PDP FCT) for the the monthly payment of allowances of 5,000 to unemployed youths in the country.
Attempts by senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to second the motion, was disrupted by the rowdiness created by the loud cries of "No No" by some senators who opposed the motion.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, intervening on the matter, asked the question. But the response of the Senators, where along party lines.
While senators of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), responded with a loud "AYE", their counterparts of the All Progressive Congress(APC), who are in majority in the house, rejected the motion.
However, a motion calling for the probe of the utilisation of Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) funds by the immediate past administration was adopted by the senators.
Sen. Babajide Omoworare, who was the leader of the motion, prayed that every naira spent by the past government on SURE-P and other poverty alleviation programmes should be accounted for.
The senators of the APC, responded with a loud "Aye", with no dissenting voice from the PDP side, when the question was put to the house by the Senate President.
However in his remarks, the senate President in his remarks, urged the Senators to take the issue of unemployment very seriously, and not to politicise it.
“We should stay above party line on this issue that is so important. We have seen growth in the last years but this has not translated to employment.
“Government alone cannot do it; the private sector has a role to play and the enabling environment must be created,” he said.
