Despite being one of the rivals competitively when it comes to the Champions League, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at least operate in a very similar manner, according to David Alaba who switched Bavaria for the Spanish capital in the summer.

After running down his contract with Bayern Munich, Alaba decided to begin a new adventure in LaLiga Santander, and he has been a revelation for Real Madrid's defence ever since.

"Bayern Munich are one of the biggest clubs in the world, the same as Real Madrid," detailed Alaba in an interview with Kicker.

"Both teams represent absolute success. However, at Real Madrid everything is a little bigger, with all due respect to Bayern."

Alaba's Bayern Munich career ended after 13 years in the summer, and he has since taken on the mantle of defensive leader in Madrid, with Sergio Ramos having departed the club in the summer for PSG.

Another player to have previously swapped the Allianz Arena for the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is Toni Kross, and the Alaba has explained how his former teammate has helped him settle down in Spain.

"He [Kroos] has helped me a lot, also privately," Alaba added. "His wife has also helped my girlfriend."

Real Madrid's ambition every season is to win the Champions League, that will never change, although there is an air of realism about the club's current prospects given the vast financial advantage both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain hold at present.

With that being said, Alaba's arrival for no transfer fee has been one of the club's best pieces of business for many years and it could well give Los Merengues a chance of success in Europe, albeit a slim one.

The Austrian himself, though, doesn't believe that it's possible to pick a favourite to win the tournament this early in the season.

"Bayern Munich definitely have a chance, Liverpool are strong, as are Chelsea and PSG to name a couple," Alaba continued.

"There is a long way to go before reaching the Champions League trophy."
